A resource is defined as “a source of aid or support that may be drawn upon when needed”. Resources are “an available source of wealth; a new or reserve supply …” [Definition Source]
A record is defined as “an account, as of information or facts, set down especially in writing as a means of preserving knowledge.” [Definition Source]
Finding a verified source for any piece of ancestry is a genealogist's dream.
An oldie but a spot-on oldie: "Genealogy without documentation is mythology."
In other words, if it doesn't have a source ...
LINKS WITH THIS BACKGROUND COLOR STILL NEED TO BE UPDATED. LINKS MAY NOT WORK.
Sometimes when we are researching and are deep into county materials, we forget that looking outside the box at things that affected those ancestors can open pathways to other pieces of data. And if nothing else, make us aware of things which affected their daily lives.
The first settlers, those who came in the 1830s and early 1840s were likely impacted by the flooding of the Missouri River and its tributaries in 1844. And there was a repeat in 1845 -- the year Milan was founded. Supplies traveled by river. Those settlers who might have built their home close to water... Imagine a dirt floor cabin during heavy rains. The first newspapers in Missouri have multiple stories about the flood and high waters. And each paper gave what boats were traveling and problems encountered. Be sure to check this site's Weather page.
Even if your ancestor did not serve in the military, wars, actions requiring protecting the home front, et al affected them. The first newspapers carried articles from short paragraphs to long columns about what military action took place. Sometimes with names of those participating. If researching such events, try using the General's name.
Epidemics traveled more than we might think. St. Louis was hit with a cholera epidemic in 1849. Boats taking supplies and passengers ... who might have been exposed ... traveled up and down the Mississipi River as well as the Missouri.
